WHY LOW ROOT
Behind Low Root Studio are Nicole and Richard, husband and wife and the founders of a company whose name holds a belief: strength begins below the surface.
Low Root is the home for what they create together, giving each object a shared foundation and the space to tell its own story.
The name grew from an observation Richard made during his years working with tree management systems. Trees raised in nursery bags can develop roots that spiral back on themselves, trapped by the very environment intended to nurture them. Above ground, the tree may continue to grow tall and impressive, while beneath the surface it lacks the deep, strong root system needed to support its height. As it grows, this hidden weakness becomes a danger, not only to the tree itself, but to everything around it.
The solution is surprisingly simple: carefully cut the spiralling root and give it the freedom to grow again, this time downwards, without constraint. Freed from its old pattern, the tree can develop the deep, resilient foundation it needs to stand tall, weather storms and flourish.
Sometimes, to grow stronger, we must first free ourselves from the patterns that hold us back.
That idea informs how we think about Low Root, from the objects we choose to develop to the relationships we build along the way.
Curiosity, restraint and a willingness to reconsider the familiar guide our approach. Unslouchable is the first product to take shape within that world, with a very personal story of its own.

HOW UNSLOUCHABLE WAS BORN
Before Unslouchable had a name, it was something Nicole wished she could find. A bag that kept her essentials close, left her hands free and felt comfortable moving through the day. The need was personal and quite ordinary, which made it all the more surprising that she could not find something that answered it.
That absence gave us somewhere to begin. Nicole brought the lived experience of wanting a different way to carry, Richard saw the possibility of building something new together.
Working with artisans in Armenia, we developed Unslouchable into a modular bag with interchangeable components, a quiet exterior and a richer world of detail within.
Its design asks you to consider what comes with you. There is room for the essentials, freedom to change individual elements, and an attention to detail that reveals itself through use. We want it to become familiar in the way the best everyday objects do: through being reached for, worn and made your own.
Carry less. Stand tall.
“We started with something we needed in our own lives. As we began making it, the people we met and the things we learned became part of it too. We want to keep that closeness to what we make, and to the people who make it with us.”

THE CRAFTSMANSHIP
Unslouchable is made by hand in collaboration with artisans in Armenia. Our approach has grown through time spent with the people behind the work, discovering materials, sharing ideas and learning from their skills.
In Amasia, Nicole sat with local women and learned to spin wool, an experience that deepened our appreciation for the hands and lives behind each material. We bring that attention to the objects we make, with considered details and materials chosen to develop character through use.
